Phulbari people protest move to conduct surveys
Published : Wednesday, 14 November 2012

DINAJPUR, Nov 13 (UNB): The National Committee to Protect Oil, Gas, Mineral Resources, Power and Port on Tuesday demanded immediate withdrawal of a recent Home Ministry order asking law enforcing agencies and the local administration to assist Asia Energy in conducting surveys in Phulbari Upazila.

Leaders of the Committee's local unit Tuesday submitted a memorandum, containing their demands, to the Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO).

Their demands also include implementation of the six-point Phulbari Accord of 2006 which the then BNP-led government signed with the Committee after three villagers were gunned down and over 100 injured by the then BDR, now BGB, and police attacks on a mob protesting the move for open pit mining in the upazila.

Earlier, a procession of thousands of supporters and activists of the Committee paraded the streets of Phulbari Municipality demanding withdrawal of the Home Ministry order.

Before submission of the memorandum, Committee's Phulbari unit convener Syed Saiful Islam Jewel addressed a brief rally on the Upazila Parishad premises.
