Tofail urges Turkey to sign FTA accord

Commerce minister Tofail Ahmed requested on Wednesday to the Turkish government to sign free trade agreement (FTA) for the mutual benefits of the two Muslim countries, officials said.

"We hope the FTA between Bangladesh and Turkey will be signed soon for mutual benefits of the two countries," he said.

He was speaking at a Turkey-Bangladesh Business Forum and business 2 business (B2B) meeting at a city hotel.

The Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) organised the event.

"I call upon the Turkish embassy to initiate the second round of discussion so that the two countries could move towards signing an FTA," he said.

The first round of talks on FTA between Bangladesh and Turkey was held recently.

Member of sectors council, Turkish Exporter's Assembly (TIM) Basaran Bayrak delivered the address of welcome.

Consultant of Bangladesh Investment Development Authority (BIDA) Samanta Farahnaz presented a keynote paper highlighting the investment opportunity and business prospects in Bangladesh.   

Turkish ambassador in Bangladesh Devrim Ozturk said that there are huge opportunities for raising trade volume between Bangladesh and Turkey.

He said Bangladeshi businessmen could avail the opportunity being offered by the Turkish government for increasing trade and businesses.

President of the FBCCI Md Shafiul Islam (Mohiuddin) stressed the need for signing an FTA with Turkey.  

He called upon the Turkish businessmen to invest in Bangladesh considering the investment-friendly opportunity offered by the government.   

"We call upon you to invest in Bangladesh considering demographic dividend of the country and other opportunities being offered by the government," he said.

The FBCCI and TIM signed a memorandum of understating for cooperation on mutual trade and investment between the two countries.  

Bangladesh's major exports to Turkey are: woven garments, jute and jute goods, knitwear, footwear, ceramic products, rubber and rubber articles. The country imports machinery and mechanical appliance, electrical equipment,  textiles and textiles articles,  products of the chemical or allied industries, mineral products etc.

Bangladesh exported goods worth US$ 631.63 million to Turkey and its imports were $212.30 million in the fiscal year 2016-17, the data provided by the FBCCI showed. First vice-president of FBCCI Sheikh Fazle Fahim offered vote of thanks.
