Shrimp cultivation brings solvency for Dinajpur farm owners

DINAJPUR, Aug 12: Commercial shrimp cultivation has been bringing financial solvency to hundreds of farm owners under Birampur upazila of Dinajpur district from the last couple of years.

The fish cultivators of the sweetwater are showing more interest to bring new waterbody under shrimp growing round the year as its cultivation proved them as more lucrative than other cultivation of the fish. They have been possessing afford to drive course of poverty and eradicating their children.

Upazila Fisheries Department said the authority concerned has taken an experiment project under shrimp production in sweetwater though the fish species grow up in the salty water since 2015. The department also arranged a three-day training session on shrimp cultivation where some 22 took part.

Farmer Fayez Md. Murad under Birampur upazila said, he started the cultivation of the shrimp cultivation releasing 14,000 pollen from Madhobpur government hatchery and some 13,000 pollen has been given him free from the Fisheries Department this season. He has spent Tk 50,000 for paying food and medicine and made Tk 1,50,000 as profit selling them in the local market, he added.

"Each kilogram of shrimp is being sold from Tk 600 to 650 in the retail market while Tk 500 to 550 in the wholesale markets," said farmer Abdul Alim under the upazila. He again said, "I have made Tk 0.3 million cultivation of fish in my 0.78 acre of pond in this year"

"I have taken 0.50 acre of waterbody spending Tk 50,000 to pay the labour as well as trout cost under the fish item production last year." said beneficiary farmer Bellal Hossain. He again said, "I will bring some 40 decimal of waterbody coming season as I have been mostly benefited from cultivating the fish."

Upazila fisheries officer Abdul Mannan said the fish weighted from 100-120 gram from eight month. Besides, the fish needs average 4 feet's deep water both in salty and sweet water, he added.
