RANGPUR, Aug 08: Price of onion has marked a sharp rise in different kitchen markets of the district, much to the worry of the consumers.

The common people, especially low, middle and fixed income groups in the district have been hit hard by the price hike of onion which has been prevailing in different kitchen markets of Rangpur during last couple of weeks.

Traders have attributed the situation to the incessant rain and high import rate of onion from India.

Presently the most essential spicy item is being sold at much exorbitant prices. Local varieties of onion are being sold at Tk 48  to Tk 50 per kg in retail markets against its previous price of Tk 28 to Tk 30 per kg a couple of weeks ago. On the other hand, imported Indian varieties have also soared as it is sold at Tk 35 to Tk 40 per kg against its previous of Tk 20 to Tk 24 per kg before.

While visiting the City Bazar, some buyers told this correspondent that it is difficult for the fixed income group to manage their livelihood if the prices of daily essentials like onion go up frequently.

They urged the authority concerned to impose a strict market monitoring system to control unusual price hike of essentials.
