State Minister for ICT Junaid Ahmed Palak on Thursday urged the foreign smartphone companies to set up manufacturing facilities in the country instead of assembling here.

"Invest here to explore the country's local market as investment in the country's ICT sector is lucrative enough thanks to the government's policies to this effect," he said.

The state minister came up with the call while inaugurating a three-day ' Smartphone & Tab Expo-2017' at the city's Bangabandhu International Conference Centre.

Expo Maker, an event management farm, is organising the tech extravaganza.

The programme was also attended, among others, by Bangladesh's Ambassador to Thailand Saida Muna Tasneem, Managing Director of Samsung Electronics Bangladesh Seungwon Youn, Marketing Director of Edison Group (Symphony Mobile) Ashraful Haque, Head of Marketing and Branding of Oppo Bangladesh Bruce Lee, Chief Executive Officer of the Xiaomi Bangladesh Dewan Kanon, Strategic Planner of Expo Maker Muhammad Khan.

Speaking on the inauguration programme as the chief guest, Mr Palak said the number of the country's smartphone users have marked a significant rise in recent times.

"Now there are around 50 million smartphone users in the country, which is also growing gradually," he said.

He said the government has already reduced taxation significantly on the 94 products by means of which smartphone manufacturing companies will be benefited hugely if they come to invest here.

Expo Maker's Muhammad Khan said the participating companies will offer lucrative prices and gift offers during the fair side by side unveiling new phones.

He said visitors will be able to pick smart devices from a variety of brands under one roof.

Prominent local and foreign brands including Samsung, Huawei, Symphony, WE, Oppo, Xiaomi, Sony Rangs, Asus Zenofone, Nokia, Lava, Linex, Micromax, Lenovo, DCL, Winmax, and smartphone retailer Gadget & Gadget, Dtel, Adata and AjkerDeal are participating in the expo.

There will also be an online quiz contest titled 'Smart Champ Quiz Contest' on the official page of the expo (, where winners will be awarded a number of attractive gift items.

The expo will remain open from 10 am to 8 pm and will end on August 5.

A 'Selfie Buzz Quiz Contest' will also be held in the fair, powered by Symphony mobile. The realtime update is being broadcast on and social media page at, organisers said.
