Flood causes Tk 36m loss to livestock sector

Around 8,332 cattle head, poultry birds die, DLS stats show
The Department of Livestock Services (DLS) revealed that an estimated loss of over Tk 36.0 million (3.60 crore) due to the onslaught of the flood in 10 north-eastern districts.

Around 8,332 cattle head and poultry birds have so far died, according to official statistics of DLS, reports BSS.

A total of 147 cattle and poultry farms got submerged in the flood-affected districts.

In addition to this, the devastated flood also damaged 2,513 metric tonnes (MT) cereal food and submerged at least 5,590 acres of pasture land in the flood affected districts which has created a crisis of cattle food in those flood affected districts.

"The ongoing flood although did not affect the livestock immensely but the country is facing huge cattle food crisis due to the flood," said Dr Md Ainul Haque, Director General (DG) of the DLS.

The report stated that most affected districts are Sirajganj, Gaibandha, Kurigram and Jamalpur.

Besides this, the DLS report also showed that the ongoing flood also affected nearly 4.3 million livestock and poultries across the country.

 Of those affected animals, 7,79,166 cattle heads, 53,637 buffaloes, 2,37,376 goats 1,09902 sheep and the rest 24,32618 poultry flocks and 6,47,496 ducks, said a damage report released by the livestock department.

The DLS has distributed 93,149 doses of livestock vaccines and 1,93,895 doses of poultry vaccines in those flood affected districts.

About the ongoing programmes, Haque told that the department already cancelled the leave of all the officials and employees in the flood affected districts and upazilas.

A central medical team has been formed led by the senior scientific officer of the livestock disease investigation laboratories to diagnosis emergency diseases of the livestock, said the official, adding that "we have formed separate medical team in each flood affected district."

The country has 24.0 million cattle, 14.0 million buffaloes, 3.4 million sheep, 26.0 million goats and 329.2 million poultry flocks.
