No way for peasants of Puthia to supply wheat to local godowns

Our Correspondent

RAJSHAHI, July 15: The genuine wheat farmers of Puthia upazila of the district are failing to supply wheat at the Wheat Procurement Centres of the upazila, it is alleged. The authenticity of the allegation was proved while visiting the food storehouses (godowns) of the upazila recently.

Some drivers of the trucks carrying wheat to the storehouses have informed, they were carrying wheat from influential persons out of the upazila. Based on their statement, it was seen, the local wheat farmers of the upazila were failing to sell wheat to the local storehouses at a fair price. As a result, they have to sell those to the local  markets at a throwaway prices.

Jahan, driver of truck No. Dhaka- metro -ta -14-6441 said, he was carrying truckload of wheat belonged to an influential political leader of Belghoria rice processing mills of Natore district .

On the other hand, Iran Ali, another driver of truck No- Dhaka-metro-Ta-18-9497 informed, he had arrived at Puthia with the wheat of an influential leader from Panchgarh district.

Requesting annonymity, some local peasants informed wheat was their one of the main crops but they could not supply and sell wheat at the wheat procurement centre in Puthia. But the Food Controller officer and the Food Godown Officer are purchasing wheat from some influential leaders outside of the upazila depriving the genuine wheat cultivators.

Food Controller Office sources in Rajshahi informed, the wheat collection drive has been started this year from  end of April this year at the rate of Tk 28 per kilogramme. The target of collection of wheat from Puthia upazila this year was fixed at 536 metric tonnes. A peasant can sell from one bag to three metric tonnes of wheat to the wheat procurement centre. And the payment of the procured wheat is given through the peasant's bank account.

Mozaffar Hossain, Controller of Food of Puthia upazila informed, there was no irregularities in wheat procurement and the allegations against wheat purchasing from outside is not based on fact. However, he did not attend the phone further saying he was in a meeting.

Rezaul Karim,  Upazila Food Godown officer said, local peasants were supplying wheat to the procurement centres and due to rainy season, the local farmers were not taking wheat at the centres regularly. While asked about the complaints of farmers about not receiving their wheat but receiving truck-load of wheat at the food godown  from Natore , Panchagarh and other districts, he refuted the allegation.

Upazila Nirbahi Office sources in Puthia said, only local and genuine peasants can deliver wheat at the wheat procurement centres and if any official of food department purchases and stores wheat from outside the upazila, action will be taken against the concerned official.
