Rain brings boom time for Bogra fishermen

BOGRA, July 11: Around 1200 fishermen of all twelve upazilas of Bogra district are managing family expenditure involving fishing jobs in the rainy season.

They have started catching the fish species in the low lying waterbody, Khal, stream and branch of rivers from the month of June and the enterprise will be continued to September. They send the fish variety to the different districts including Dhaka mitigating the local demand during the time. Some people of the other profession are seen involving with the job in the rainy season.

The correspondent found, the fishermen gather in the fish market from the very early in the morning from farther corner of the district.

The big fish markets are considered, Fotteh Ali bazar, Khander bazar, Goderpara bazar, Raza bazar, Mohasthsthan bazara, Chowmuhony bazar and noted Tinmatah bazar of the district.

Each kg of indigenous cat fish is being sold from Tk 800 to 1000 while Sing fish is Tk 700 to 800 in the retail market whereas Tk 700 to 750 and 650 to 780 respectively in the wholesale markets, said fisherman Haresh Uddin, 56, at Banduria village under Dupchanchia upazila of the district.

But couple months back the fish market were beyond touchable.

"I bought fishing trap with Tk 3000 and catch 2 kgs of indigenous fish with hand everyday from the genesis of rainy season and sold for Tk 800 to 1000 in Dupchanchia fish market without spending money." said fisherman Bishu, 45, at Sonnopara village under Dupchanchia upazila of the district.

Another fisherman Haipath Hossain, 50, son late Osir Uddin Gunager village of the district said, he depends on the catching fish job round the year but rainy season is blessing for him.

He uses current nets to catch the indigenous fish in the low lying waterbody and manage the expenditure of the family members.

A wholesaler Akram Hossain, 67, at Fottej Ali bazar under sadar upazila said, the selling market of the different fish species keep remain low during the rainy season but the market of the fish item keeps remain high other time of the year. The fishermen make a handsome money doing the job, he added.

"I have bought one kg of indigenous Koi fish from Raza bazar with Tk 500 as the huge supply helps to market price down from last few weeks." said customer Ejajul Haque, 50, at Fapor village under sadar upazila.

He again said, "The price will remain favourable till September."
