Facebook mission to bring world closer

Facebook is building its own village to house its highly paid technology workers alongside low-income local residents, in an attempt to fulfil its new mission of bringing the world closer together in its own backyard, reports a global media Sunday.

The Silicon Valley company has unveiled plans to build a new campus with 1,500 apartments and 125,000 square feet of retail space including a grocery store and pharmacy, as well as offices.

Computer generated images of the future campus show young upwardly mobile professionals mixing with families of all races in a sunny field, along a shopping street and on a public plaza.

John Tenanes, vice-president of global facilities and real estate, said Facebook wants to provide “long-needed community services” to Menlo Park, where it has been based since 2011. It is working with local government and community organisations and will supply 15 per cent of the housing at below market rates.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg broadened the company’s mission last month to “bringing the world closer together”, from “connecting the world”, as he comes to terms with the power of owning a network as large as Facebook.
