US Navy tried to save destroyer from sinking

The surviving crew of the USS Fitzgerald fought a desperate battle to save the destroyer from sinking after an unexplained night-time collision with a container ship left several sailors dead and the commanding officer “lucky to be alive”.

US Navy officials said that a search of the Fitzgerald’s flooded cabins - which was possible only after huge volumes of water were pumped out - had recovered “a number” of dead sailors. The identities of those found in the flooded compartments would be released when their families had been notified, said navy officials, who declared that an extensive maritime search was over.

In a statement issued after the heavily listing Fitzgerald was escorted back to the US naval port 70km south of Tokyo in Yokosuka on Saturday, the US Navy said that seven sailors were missing, while three were being treated for injuries. The injured included the warship’s commanding officer, Commander Bryce Benson, whose cabin was destroyed in the collision.
