FE Report

Bangladesh Railway (BR) has taken initiatives to upgrade the rail-track between Dhaka and Narayanganj to a dual-gauge one for facilitating movements of passengers through commuter trains.

As part of the initiatives, BR is going to sign a Tk 2.63 billion package deal with a Chinese company today (Monday) to construct 12 kilometre-long dual-gauge rail-track in one and a half year.

Officials said Power Construction Company of China has been awarded the work of constructing the track along with embankment and five loop lines. The company was selected among five competitors, which were short-listed earlier.

They said the track will be constructed from Gendaria of Old Dhaka to Narayanganj station, as similar track from Dhaka to Gendaria is planned under Padma Rail Link project.

"This line will help improve commuter train services and increase their number. There is high demand of such trains between the two important cities," said an official involved with the project.

At present 16 commuter trains are daily in service between Dhaka and Narayanganj.

According to the development project proposal, BR has taken move to construct the dual-gauge line at a cost of Tk 3.78 billion. The Chinese company will undertake the main component of the project.

Another package of the project, costing Tk 670 million, has been under process to develop signalling system for the line.
