Pisciculture in TIP area progressing fast

NILPHAMARI, June 12: Pisciculture in Teesta Irrigation Project (TIP) area, the largest irrigation project of the country, has started fulfilled the long standing desire of the people. The project is simultaneously to produce fish and create employment opportunity for the local people.

The TIP envisages to comprise 34 km main canal, 275 km main branch canal 1,450 km secondary canal and 2,720 km tertiary canal to provide irrigation in Rangpur, Dinajpur and Bogra districts.

At present only in some segments of main canal, main branch canal and in secondary canals fish rearing project has been undertaken in this year. Sources said in Jaldhaka, Dimla, Kishorganj and Nilphamari Sadar upazilas fish is being reared in 13 segments.

Sources said committees has been formed in each segment comprising the local people to look after fish rearing on the basis of contract system between the beneficiary local people and the organisations of Water Development Board (WDB) and Department of Fisheries. The local people would get 70 per cent of profit and the government organisation would get 30 per cent.

Sources said 1,666 kg of fish fry has been released in canals of Dimla, 1,040 kg in Sadar, 1,066 kg in Kishorgonj and 3,333 kg in Jaldhaka upazilas.

Sources said officials of WDB and Fisheries Department are constantly supervising the project. A meeting was held in Dalia Rest House of WDB to evaluate about the progress of the project on Sunday. Presided over by WDB circle-2 supervising engineer Jyoti Proshad Ghosh, the meeting was attended by deputy director (DD), Fishers Department, Rangpur zone, Rafiq Uddin Biswas, assistant DD Aditiya Chandro Roy, DD of Fishers Department, Dinajpur, Shah Imam Jafar, DD of Fisheries Department, Nilphamari, Abdul Wahed Mondol and others.
