Bangladesh promises top level security to Australia

Bangladesh has assured the highest level of security to Australia during their proposed cricket tour of the country in August-September this year.

Bangladesh Cricket Board official Nizamuddin Chowdhury said this in Dhaka on Wednesday after holding meeting with the head of security of the Cricket Australia, according to a media report.

The report mentioned that similar security assurances from the authorities in Bangladesh persuaded the England cricket team to arrive in the country last year and the visitors were provided with presidential style security during their tour.

It quoted Nizamuddin as saying: "What is usually reserved for a visiting head of state will be provided to them (Australia)."

His comments came during Cricket Australia security head Sean Carroll’s Dhaka visit to oversee plans for the tour, during which Aussies are scheduled to play two Tests.

Australia have not played a Test in the country since Ricky Ponting's team visited Dhaka in 2006, just six years after Bangladesh were granted Test status.

Australia were scheduled to play two Tests in Bangladesh in October 2015 but the tour was cancelled amid security fears after attacks by Islamist extremists in South Asian country.

Australia also refused to send their junior team to Under-19 World Cup hosted by Dhaka last year.

Bangladesh also successfully hosted the England cricket team last year, drawing the Test series 1-1.

"We have guaranteed that the security, which was given to England team last year, similar arrangement will be making for the Australian team," Chowdhury said.

"If any additional requirement is needed, we are ready to provide that," he added.
