Electricity disruption

WE got it from the media that at least half the country had to face untold miseries due to power failure when at least one pylon of electricity supply of 230 megawatt distribution line collapsed due to norwester on May 1, 2017. It appears from the pictures shown in newspapers that steel fabricated pylon is like a cobweb or so though various types of steel sections, angles, channels, flat bars etc. all made of steel, collapsed. Though while designing maximum wind velocity based on historical data on our past experience must have been considered, it is normal to use steel materials of high standard specified in books of standards conforming to British Standard (BS), Indian Standard (IS) Japanese Industrial Standard (JIS), German Industrial Standard (DIN) etc. All these standards specify chemical composition of steel along with physical properties like ultimate tensile strength, percentage elongation, bend ability etc. The steel sections used in fabricating pylons are fabricated and erected and thus it is hard to believe how such pylon can fail and collapse like cobwebs. Let the authority investigate further into the incident.
