Over 1m PCs still vulnerable to infection

Security experts estimate that more than 1 million PCs are still vulnerable to infection by WannaCry because they have failed to apply the patch that Microsoft provided two months earlier, according to a global media report Monday.

On Friday night, after the malware hit targets including the UK’s National Health Service, French carmaker Renault and US delivery group FedEx, Microsoft issued another emergency fix for older versions of Windows that it no longer routinely supports.

While acknowledging Microsoft’s own responsibility in addressing security vulnerabilities in its products, spokesman called on governments to consider the damage to civilians that comes from hoarding these vulnerabilities and the use of these exploits.

Microsoft’s criticism of the US authorities over their approach to cyber attacks and national security recalls Apple’s fight with the Federal Bureau of Investigation last year over American law enforcement’s attempts to break into an iPhone belonging to the terrorist behind the San Bernardino shooting.

Apple argued then against an order by the US government to write new software to help unlock the device, claiming that doing so would create a “back door” that would weaken the security and privacy for all iPhone owners if it ever fell into the wrong hands.
