FE Report

The Open Market Sale (OMS) of essential commodities by the Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) is scheduled to begin today (Monday) across the country ahead of the holy month of Ramadan.

A total of 185 trucks have been deployed to sell five essential commodities including chickpea, sugar, lentil, soybean oil and date at subsidised prices.

Of the trucks, 33 have been employed in Dhaka, 10 in Chittagong, five each in other divisional cities and two each in district towns.

The sale will remain closed on Fridays only, said TCB chief official (commercial) Akther Hossain.

He said a total of 2,811 dealers across the country will be involved in the process.

A consumer, according to him, can buy highest 4 kgs of sugar, 3 kgs of lentil, 5 litres of soybean oil, 5 kgs of chickpea and one kg of date from the OMS facility.

Soybean oil price has been fixed at Tk 85 a litre, sugar Tk 55 a kg, lentil Tk 80, chickpea Tk 70 and date Tk 120 per kg.

These essentials are being sold in the mainstream market at much higher rates as bottled soybean was seen trading at Tk 105-107 a litre, according to the TCB.

Sugar prices increased by 10 per cent to Tk 70-75 a kg while chickpea by 15 per cent to Tk 85 to Tk 120 a kg based on quality over the period of last three weeks across the country.

Lentil prices were, however, found unchanged at Tk 90-Tk 110 (coarse) and Tk 120-Tk 135 (finer) a kg.

According to the TCB, allocation for each truck's daily sale is 300-400 kgs of sugar, 250-300 kgs of lentil, 300-400 kgs of chickpea, 20-30 kgs of date and 300-400 litres of soybean oil.

The Corporation has a stock of 2,000 tonnes of lentil, 1,000 tonnes of sugar, 2,200 tonnes of chickpea, 1000 tonnes of soybean oil and 19 tonnes of date as of now, sources concerned said.
