Law Minister Anisul Huq has urged Belgium Deputy Prime Minister Didier Reynders to reopen its embassy in Dhaka soon so that the two countries can engage in broader economic activities.

Belgium closed its embassy in Dhaka in 1990.

Reynders who is also the foreign minister assured him “to actively consider the proposal and take practical steps, at least to establish a representational office in one of the European Missions in Dhaka”.

They were meeting at Brussels on Wednesday, the foreign ministry said on Thursday. State Minister for Foreign Affairs Md Shahriar Alam was also present during the meeting.

The Belgium foreign minister has expressed his intent to expand economic ties with Bangladesh.

Recalling the horrific terrorist attacks in Brussels in the recent past, he also expressed his desire to have “closer cooperation” with Bangladesh in fighting the global scourge of terrorism and violent extremism.

He also indicated his willingness to undertake a visit to Bangladesh as he was invited by his counterpart AH Mahmood Ali before.
