Teesta erosion leaves 50 more families homeless
RANGPUR, Apr 19: Erosion by the Teesta river has rendered at least 50 families of Hajipara village under Alambiditor union in Gangachara upazila homeless in the last one week.
Vast areas of cropfields, a good number of vegetables gardens have been devoured by the river.
Local sources said erosion had made some 100 families of the village homeless last year. This year, so far 50 families have become homeless and more than 100 families are in the threat.
Farmer Abul Kashem said the Teesta devoured his three acres of cropland last year. This year his 20 decimals of land are in peril.
Some victims said the erosion engulfed everything on its bank and they hardly could save their belongings. They urge the authority concerned for taking adequate steps immediately to save more than 100 houses from the erosion.
Local union council chairman Aftabuzzaman said work of river protection embankment has already started near the affected Hajipara village. The work is expected to begin in the affected area soon, he added.
