Watermelon brings financial solvency to Bogra growers
BOGRA, Mar 18: Farmers of the Char areas in Dhunot upazila under the district are expecting a bumper watermelon output and fair market prices this season.
The poor and marginal farmers of Baishakhi, Radhanagar, Zibbar areas had made a satisfactory profit by farming watermelon in 24 acres of land last year. This year, more lands have been brought under the farming of the juicy summer fruit.
The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) office source said over 40 hectares of land have been brought under watermelon cultivation in first week of the January taking logistic support from the local agri office. They have already started harvesting of the crops from second week of the current month. The harvest will start in full swing from the next month.
Hajjad Hossain, a farmer of Baishahki Char, said he has brought one bigha of land under the farming of watermelon this season spending Tk 4000. He is expecting to make a profit of Tk 20,000.
A good number of farmers of the upazila have overcome the curse of poverty by growing watermelon from the last few years, said farmer Shalekh Hossain. Cultivators of the area generally use pheromone trap which help the fruits remain healthy, tasty and nutritious.
According to DAE official sources, cultivation of watermelon has increased in recent times as it has become more profitable.
The present retail market rate of watermelon at Tk 1200 to Tk 1300 per maund while the price is at Tk 1,000 to Tk 1,050.
Sub-assistant agriculture officer of DAE Faridur Rahman said though the farmers of the upazila do not farm the fruit on commercial basis, the cultivation is increasing every year. High market prices allure the growers so that they could earn more within a short period of time.
