The Wage Board has finalised its draft proposal recommending more than 122 per cent hike in minimum monthly pay for the workers in divisional city and city corporations of the country's pharmaceutical industry, officials said.
The board, in a gazette notification issued on November 23 last, also sought written objections and recommendations, if any, within the next 14 days.
The board recommended Tk 8,200 and Tk 8,050 minimum monthly wages for an unskilled worker living in divisional city and city corporations respectively.
A Tk 4,600 and Tk 4,500 have been proposed as basic payment for unskilled workers living in divisional city and city corporations, according to the draft.
In both areas, a 50 per cent of the basic payment has been proposed as house rent, Tk 700 as medical allowance and Tk 600 for transportation.
The last minimum wage for the workers and employees of the sector was set at Tk 3,625 and Tk 4,500 respectively in 2009, according to officials.
"Considering the objections or recommendations, the board will finally recommend the minimum wage to the government after the 14 days' time duration," said chairman of the board Md Ali Haider.
Earlier in May last, the government had taken an initiative to review the wages for the workers of the pharmaceuticals industry considering the rising cost of living and later appointed representatives from the factory owners and workers.
Md Halimuzzaman, chief executive officer of Healthcare Pharmaceuticals Ltd, and Md Ziaul Hoque, president of Novartis Bangladesh Ltd Sramik Karmachari Union, were appointed representatives of the owners and the workers' side respectively.
There are three categories for skilled, semi-skilled and unskilled workers,, while for employees there are four grades.
According to the draft, the minimum monthly wage for semi-skilled workers has been proposed at Tk 8,800 and Tk 8,500 for divisional city and city corporations respectively with basic Tk 5,000 and Tk 4,800.
Wages of skilled workers of grade four were recommended as Tk 10,000 and Tk 9,550, grade three as Tk 10,600 and Tk 10,300 and grade two as Tk 11,500 and Tk 11, 200 respectively.
The minimum wage for skilled workers for grade one of divisional city and city corporations was recommended being Tk 13,000 and Tk 12,550 respectively.
Wages of the employees of grade one for divisional city and city corporations will get the same as those of grade one skilled workers.
Employees of grade two and four will get the same amount of grade three and grade five (semi skilled) workers, while and grade three employees will get Tk 9,550 and Tk 9,180 for divisional city and city corporations respectively.
The minimum monthly wage for the apprentice workers and employees was recommended at Tk 6,500 and Tk 7,000 respectively.
