CI seizes Mitsubishi car from Uttara
Customs Intelligence (CI) seized on Tuesday a sport utility vehicle (SUV), imported under diplomatic privilege, from the city's Uttara area.
Stephen Prisner, former senior official of United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), imported Mitsubishi Pajero to Bangladesh under diplomatic privilege.
But dodging duty and without taking permission from the authority, he sold the car worth of over Tk 10 million to another person and left the country, sources said.
Acting on a tip-off, a team of Customs Intelligence officials recovered the car from the house of Ashikul Hasib Tarique in Uttara sector-4 as the owner failed to show necessary documents, said CI Director General Moinul Khan.
He said under duty-free facility, the former UNDP official imported the vehicle that contains yellow number plate which means it can only be used by a privileged person.
Even though Mr Ashikul, also a former UNDP official, is not a privileged person, he used the car for over a year and paid no tax on the car, the DG added.
Mr Khan said they will contact the UNDP Resident Representative in Bangladesh to take legal action against Stephen Prisner in this regard.
CI filed a case in this connection under the Customs Act 1969.
