GAIBANDHA, Nov 24: A day-long nutrition fair and cooking competition was held on Thursday on the premises of Molongbazar School at Faridpur Union under Sadullapur Upazila of the district amid much festivity and joyous mood.
Profitable Opportunity for Food Security (PROOFS) project which is being implemented by ICCO Cooperation, iDE and BoP innovation center in Sadar, Palashbari, Sadullapur and Gobindaganj upazilas organised the fair with the financial support of the Embassy of the Netherlands.
In this connection, a discussion meeting was also held on the school premises with local union parishad chairman Nur Azam Mondal in the chair while upazila health and family planning officer Dr. Abu Ahammad Al Mamun, and district nutrition officers of PROOFS Moshina Yasmin and Delwar Hossain addressed the function, among others.
The speakers in their speeches urged all to take three types of nutritional foods---heat and energetic, body building, and disease prevention ones frequently to keep fit well and help build sound and healthy nation as well.
The nutrition foods cooked in presence of all by the 10 women of producer group formed by the PROOFS was displayed for all.
Later, three of them were given prizes on behalf of the PROOFS for cooking nutrition food and the rest were also provided with consolation prizes.
Besides, five stalls were also set up in the fair where nutritious foods of different companies including SMC, ACI and NSA were displayed for the visitors.
Apart from it, an orchestra of the PROOFS rendered songs regarding nutrition to motivate the people, particularly the women, to take it appropriately, sources said.
A large number of women coming from far flung areas of the union and its neighboring areas of the upazila including journalists of print and electronic media visited the fair.
Discussion on nutrition situation in Nilphamari
Meanwhile, BSS adds: Health experts at a meeting have focused on ensuring proper breastfeeding and home-made foodstuffs for the babies to meet their nutritional demand for healthier growth.
They expressed the opinion at a meeting organised by District Nutrition Coordination Committee with UNICEF assistance on Wednesday at the conference room of District Adhunik Sadar Hospital in Nilphamari district town.
District Nutrition Officer Saniya Islam Khondker delivered keynote presentation in the meeting presided over by Civil Surgeon of Nilphamari Dr Abdur Rashid.
Medical Officer of Sadar Upazila Maternity and Child Welfare Centre Dr Rokhsana Begum, Child Specialist Dr Enamul Haque, Medical Officer of District Adhunik Sadar Hospital Dr Moniruzzaman Moni were present on the occasion.
Nilphamari District Livestock Officer Shahjalal Khondker, Deputy Director of Department of Agriculture Extension Golam Md Idris, District Information Officer Mozammel Haque, District Primary Education Officer Dilip Kumar Banik and District Secondary Education officer Shafikul Islam also spoke.
In her presentation, Saniya Islam Khondker narrated the present child nutrition situation in Nilphamari with statistics and various government steps taken for improving the situation.
"A total of 2,400 babies are suffering from severe malnutrition in six upazilas of Nilphamari where number of such babies is the highest in Kishoreganj Upazila," she said putting emphasis on comprehensive efforts to overcome the situation.
The speakers put maximum emphasis on creating awareness among the common people and mothers to ensure proper breast-feeding for at least six months and providing home- made foods to the babies and children.
Dr Rokhsana Begum laid importance on successful implementation of the comprehensive national nutrition service programme being implemented by the government to prevent malnutrition of all, including babies, mothers and children.
The Civil Surgeon stressed the need for comprehensive GO-NGO efforts to disseminate knowledge on necessity of breastfeeding among the common people, selecting and consuming nutritious foodstuffs to ensure nutrition of the babies for building a healthy nation.
