Turn physically-challenged people into efficient workforce : Speakers

RAJSHAHI, Oct 16 (BSS): Speakers at a meeting here have said instead of neglecting the physically-challenged people, they should be built as efficient workforce to make a prosperous Bangladesh.

They also said the government should take up long-term plans to solve the existing problems faced by the country's physically challenged people instead of relying on relief-based approaches.

In this context, they viewed that the charity-based approaches and projects don't yield desired result as they leave out a large part of the physically challenged population, who need it the most.

The observations came at a post-rally discussion held in the conference hall of Public Library in observance of the International White Cane Security Day-2016 yesterday.

Department of Social Services (DSS) organised the discussion in association with National Disabled Development Foundation and National Blind Association.

Commissioner of Rajshahi Division Abdul Hannan addressed the discussion as chief guest with DSS Deputy Director Rubina Yeasmin in the chair. Deputy Commissioner of Rajshahi Metropolitan Police Tanveer Haider Chowdhury and Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) Ataul Gani also spoke.

Terming the physically-challenged people as an integral part of the society they observed that overall development of the nation is not possible, excluding the huge population.

They called for creating better scopes for education and vocational training to create more employment opportunities for the challenged people.

Earlier, a large number of school students, government and non-government officials and development activists brought out a rally from Shaheb Bazar crossing. After parading some thoroughfares the rally converged on the meeting venue.
