A woman, rescued from Sandhya River in Barisal after a trawler capsize on Wednesday, died at Banaripara Upazila Health Complex in the afternoon, raising the death toll from the accident to 14.
Firefighters and hospital sources told reporters in the evening that 14 people died and 13 others remained missing after the trawler ‘ML Oishee’ sank in the river’s Banaripara Dasherhaat point while being anchored at the terminal around 12 noon.
Mustafizur Rahman, deputy director of River Security and Traffic Department of Bangladesh Inland and Water Transport Authority (BIWTA), said divers retrieved 13 bodies from the river while another one died at the local hospital.
The deceased were identified as Abdur Razzak, 75, a retired army man, Rabeya Begum, 35, Mozammel Mollah, 62, Rehana Begum, 35, Sukhdeb Mallik, 35, Milon Gharami, 32, Sagar Mir, 15, Joynal Hawladar, 55, Firoza Begum, 55, Shanta, 7, daughter of Siddiqur Rahman, Hira Begum and Monwara Begum, 45, Kohinoor Begum, 40, wife of Majibor Rahman, and Saleha Begum, 60, – all hailed from Wazirpur and Banaripara Upazilas.
Of them, Saleha Begum who was rescued from the river died at Banaripara Health Complex.
The bodies were later handed over to their respective families.
Meanwhile, the rescue operation was suspended due to strong current in the river and bad light although some 13 passengers are still missing.
However, a team of Bangladesh Navy went to the spot to join the rescue operation while BIWTA rescue vessel ‘Nirvik’ set out for the spot to salvage the sunken trawler which was located some 60 feet beneath the water. The watercraft was carrying 50-60 when it capsized, according to a news agency. -bz
