Responsible Minister

THE Minister for Roads and Bridges has owned responsibility for road accidents that are happening. This is how it should be in a democracy. Stiff financial penalties as well as the regular penal charges should be enforced on the owners of the vehicles if his/her vehicle is responsible for any accident or traffic rule violation. If such a law is passed, all owners of commercial vehicles (trucks, buses or scooters) will ensure that the drivers of their  vehicles drive with full responsibility.

In my opinion, buses causing an accident should be fined Tk.5,000. For a truck carrying cargo, it should be one half of the value of the cargo it is carrying (based on cargo documents; if not estimated on site of accident) if the amount exceeds Tk.30,000. This amount should be paid to the victims within ten days of the accident. Police must verify after the days mentioned above that the instruction has been complied with. If not, an additional amount of Tk.2500 will have to be paid to the police authority over an official receipt. For an auto rickshaw causing an accident resulting in injury of a person, the minimum dine for the owner of the auto rickshaw should be Tk.2,500.

Hopefully, if such a law is enacted, the number of accidents will come down rapidly.
