Country's literacy rate 59.82 pc

As per the latest literacy survey report of Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS), the country's literacy rate of the population aged above 15 reached 59.82 per cent while the illiteracy rate is 40.18 and the literacy of women is 55.71 per cent, reports BSS.

The literacy rate has been increased substantially during the tenure of present government and according to the Literacy Assessment Survey of BBS, it is now 11.75 per cent, Primary and Mass Education Minister Dr Md Afsarul Ameen told parliament Tuesday replying to a scripted question of treasury bench member Sadhana Halder.

To another question from treasury bench member Sukumar Ranjan Ghosh, the minister said the government will launch a 'Fundamental Literacy Project (64 districts)' to provide fundamental literacy knowledge to 4.5 million illiterate people of ages between 15 and 45.

"In line with its commitment to building an illiteracy-free country, the government will launch the fundamental literacy project soon at the field level of the country," said Dr Ameen.
