A fire broke out at Akram Tower at Bijoynagar in the city Monday afternoon, police said.
Firefighters said the fire that burnt down furniture and wooden wall fittings originated from a discarded cigarette butt while carpenters were at work on the 13th floor of the 16-storied building in the afternoon.
On information, firemen rushed to the spot and took 30 minutes to douse the fire with the help of the local people.
No one was hurt in the blaze.
In another fire at a plastic factory at Kamrangir Char valuables worth Tk 25,000 were gutted in the evening.
