Ten motor workshops and nearly 50 shanties of a slum were gutted in a devastating fire at Rayerbazar in the capital's Hazaribagh area Thursday, the police said. Witnesses said the flame originated from an oven at Rayerbazar slum, behind the Shikder Medical College and Hospital, at about 1:00pm and spread to the adjacent areas, burning down at least 50 shanties and ten motor workshops. On information, firefighters from several city stations rushed to the area but received brickbats thrown by the local people as they made delay in reaching the spot, a fireman said. "Narrow approach road caused delay of our arrival," he said. They, however, doused the blaze after two-hour frantic efforts with the help of local people and law enforcers. "Valuables worth about Tk 6.0 million were damaged in the fire," the fireman said.
