A daylong international conference titled "14th Bangladesh International Geographical Conference" held at the conference room of Zahir Raihan auditorium of Jahangirnagar University (JU) Saturday.
The main theme of the conference was "Geography and Environment: Challenge in 21st Century".
Organised by Bangladesh National Geographical Association (BNGA) around 250 noted geographers, environmentalists and other scientists from home and abroad participated in it.
Vice-chancellor (VC) of the university Prof Dr Anwar Hossain graced the inaugural session of the conference as the chief guest while Pro-VC Prof Dr Farhad Hossain and treasurer Md Nasir Uddin addressed as special guests.
The speakers urged all to come forward to ensure environmental safety and avert climate disaster for peaceful existence of human beings.
While addressing JU VC Prof Dr Anwar Hossain said that it's the appropriate time to think about fortification of environment, otherwise the environment would be imbalanced and our existence might be threatened.
The sub-themes of the conference were rural and urban environment, population and health, maritime environment, climate change and disaster, agriculture and food security and resource management.
Secretary General of BNGA Prof Dr Khandoker Mohammod Shariful Huda delivered the address of welcome at the conference.
Dr KB Sajjadur Rasheed, former professor of department of Geography and Environment of Dhaka University presented the keynote paper.
Prof Dr Peter J Atkins of Durham University, UK, also presented a paper on "Geography and Environment".
President of BNGA Prof Subash Chandra Das presided over the function.
A new executive body of BNGA has been formed with Prof Rafiqul Islam Rumi of Rajshahi University and Prof M Nazrul Islam as its president and Secretary General respectively.
