Our Correspondent

CHITTAGONG, Aug 24: A delegation of Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA) and Taipei World Trade Centre led by its WTC Chairman James CF Huang visited the World Trade Centre in the port city on Thursday.

The delegation members also held a meeting with the President of Chittagong Chamber of Commerce and Industry Mahbubul Alam and discussed various bilateral issues at the Bangabandhu Conference Hall at the WTC.

Welcoming the guests, Mr Mahbubul Alam said Bangladesh maintains excellent friendly and trade relations with Taiwan, the fifth largest economy in Asia.

He urged the Taiwanese entrepreneurs to import more goods from Bangladesh to lower the trade deficit with Taiwan.

He said that due to its geographically strategic location, Chittagong has become an attractive investment destination for global investors, as it connected the South and Southeast Asian regions.

The CCCI president also requested the TAITRA to open a liaison office at the World Trade Centre in Chittagong for greater cooperation between the businesses of both the countries.

He urged the Taiwan businesses to invest individually or in joint venture with the local entrepreneurs in the ICT sector in the High-tech Park and the special economic zones in Bangladesh.

Terming the MICE (meetings, incentives, conference and exhibition) Tourism a very potential industrial sector, he said this sector is not flourishing as expected due to lack of proper branding.

James CF Huang appreciated the incentives offered by the Bangladesh government to attract foreign investment and said TAITRA is working towards expanding trade by Taiwanese businesses and entrepreneurs to 60 countries of the world, including Bangladesh.

He also said both the countries should work closely to reduce the trade gap.

Director of Taiwan World Trade Centre Danny Young stressed the need for the CCCI and TAITRA to work together to promote various facilities, including the issuance of e-visa.

CCCI vice-president and directors were present at the meeting.
