Red Lady papaya farming gaining popularity

GOPALGANJ, Aug 24: Red Lady papaya cultivation is gaining popularity among the marginal farmers of the district as it is proved a profitable vegetable in the region.

According to the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) official sources said 132 hectares of land have been brought under the farming of the papaya variety with the production target of 2,443 tonnes.

Ruma Sarker, sub-assistant agriculture officer of Durgapur union under Sadar upazila said Red Lady variety is a short duration vegetable. It does not require high cost to be produced. Farmers do not need to give much effort to farm it.

Md Ruman Sheikh of Karargati village under Sadar upazila, said the variety is a high yielding. He said he is cultivating Red Lady on 26 decimals of land.

He also said he spent Tk 5,000 to grow the vegetable and expressed the hope to make a profit of Tk 40,000 if the weather condition remains favourable till the last harvest.

Samir Kumar Gowshami, deputy director (Agriculture), said cultivation of Red Lady is bright in the area as the soil and weather is favourable for its farming.
