Flood water receding in Nilphamari

NILPHAMARI, Aug 24: Flood water is receding gradually in the district. Water in the Teesta Irrigation Project barrage is still above danger mark.

However flood created havoc in so many directions in the district.

In the last few days rain fish of 20,000 ponds has been washed away and escaped out of the pond, Amon paddy in 38000 hectares of land has been submerged, 50,000 people has been affected and 100 houses has gone under Teesta river erosion.

District fisheries officer Hasan Ferdous said pisciculture in the district would be affected much. Deputy Director of DAE Golam Md Idris said Aman paddy in 38,000 hectares of land remained under water for more than 10 days as a result of which 80 per cent of the crop would be destroyed.

Mayor of Saidpur Municipality Amzad Hossain said 5000 people of the municipality have been affected by flood due to breaking up municipal protection dam.

In the meantime, Water Resources Minister Anisur Islam Mahmud and concerned official visited the flood affected area.

Sources said the government allotted 300 tonnes of rice and Tk 0.8 million for relief and rehabilitation for the flood affected people. Sources added relief operation is going on extensively across the affected area of the municipality.
