Fisheries dept gets GI certificate on Hilsa

Industry minister Amir Hossain Amu handed over the geographical indication or GI certificate of Hilsa to the Department of Fisheries (DoF) on Thursday.

DoF Director General Md Arif Azad received the certificate at a ceremony, organised by the Department of Patent, Design and Trademark (DoPDT), held at CIRDAP Auditorium in Dhaka city. 

Hisla has recently been registered by the DoPDT as the second Bangladeshi GI product followed by Jamdani sari. 

State minister to the fisheries and livestock ministry Narayan Chandra Chand was present as the special guest while secretary to the ministry Maksudul Hasan Khan presided it over.

Additional secretary to the industry ministry Shusen Chandra Das and registrar of DoPDT Md Sanwar Hossain were also present.

Bangladesh produces over 0.49 million tonnes of Hilsa--70-75 per cent of global output. Nearly 2.5 million people are involved in the fishing to trading process of the Bangladesh’s national fish Hilsa.
