NATORE, Aug 23: Getting repeated bumper production previous years, thousands of hopeful peasants of the vast Barind tract have brought drought tolerance Brri Dhan-48 variety massively in this current season.

Agriculture specialist Dr Shakhawat Hossain said Brri Dhan-48 was innovated by Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI) few years back to mitigate the scarcity of the paddy among farmers in the region. The farmers of Bogra, Naogaon, Sirajganj, Pabna, Rajshahi, Joypurhat, Natore and Chapainawabganj districts are showing more interest to cultivate the paddy variety, he added.

"I have taken some five bighas of land under Brri Dhan-48 variety cultivation in this season hoping for good yield spending Tk 35, 000," said farmer Ranjan Ail under Shinga upazila. He again said, "I got over 98 maunds of yield previous year cultivating the paddy and sold at Tk 89,000."

Agri experts express the hope that the variety would bring a positive result for the growers in the rain-fed drought prone area. The authority has taken all sorts of necessary steps to make the programme successful.

Farmer Shahidul Islam, 34, under Royganj upazila of Sirajganj said he took two bighas of land under the paddy variety as the variety gives satisfactory yield with scanty rainfall and limited irrigation during the Aus season in the area. He is expecting a good yield of the crops in this season.

The farmers can harvest the paddy variety after 120 day of its plantation, said sub-assistance agriculture officer Mizanur Rahman. It's proved more lucrative to the marginal peasants in the region, he added.
