Market prices delight Bogra brinjal growers

BOGRA, Aug 23:  Brinjal growers of the area are happy over good market prices of the vegetable from the last couple of weeks.

"I have sold some 20 kgs of brinjal in local market at Dhaphat at Tk 1,000. Each kg of the vegetable is being sold at Tk 50 to Tk 52 in the kitchen markets," said farmer Mahir Uddin in Dakaher village under Dupchanchia upazila.

Sub-assistant agriculture officer Faridur Rahman said, the farmers have cultivated the crops last June with the assistance of authority concern and begun harvesting brinjal from first week August. The crops can be harvested after 90 days of its plantation, he added.

The farmers of Dupchanchia, Dhunot, Sonatola, Sariakandi, Gabtoly, Adamdighi, Kahaloo, Sibganj, Sherpur, Sazahanpur and sadar upazilas of the area have shown more interest during the time of planting the mild sapling to grow brinjal in their own cropland as they got good market price and satisfactory yield previous year.

Monowar Hossain, 23, under Kahaloo upazila said that he has brought one bigha of land under cultivation of brinjal this season and make Tk 23,500. He is expecting more profit.

Encouraged by good profit a large number of farmers in the district are cultivating it and are becoming financially solvent. The brinjal growers will make huge money from the remaining part of the crops in the season if the weather remains favourable till next months.

Another farmer Tozammel Hossain under Kahaloo upazila said, "I cultivated high quality brinjal on 0.12 acres of land spending Tk 1400 for fartilisers and irrigation cost." "I have already harvested some eight maunds of the vegetable and sold those at a cost of Tk 12,800 in a local kitchen market." he added.

Many farmers who depend on agriculture sectors round the year have become able to overcome poverty by growing different varieties of vegetables including brinjal, said Deputy Director of Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) Protul Chandra.
