Revenue from the country's land ports maintained a steady rise in fiscal year 2016-17 (FY17) as these ports earned Tk 1.0 billion, up by Tk 170 million or 20.44 per cent from Tk 830 million in the fiscal year 2015-16, reports BSS.

"Revenue earnings from the land ports have been maintaining an increasing trend because of the development of infrastructure. Exporters and importers are getting timely services from the ports," said chairman of Bangladesh Land Port Authority (BLPA) Tapan Kumar Chakrabharty.

Talking to BSS, he said development of infrastructure of two more land ports and expansion of Benapole and Bhomra ports are progressing fast with the financial assistance of the World Bank (WB). Export-import will be increased through the land ports when the development programmes will be completed, he added.

He said the land ports handled 10 million tonnes of export and import goods in FY18.

According to BLPA, 88 per cent of the total revenue came from three land ports: Benapole, Burimari and Bhomra.

Like previous fiscal years, Benapole port earned the highest Tk 440 million revenue in FY17, Burimari earned Tk 270 million, while Bhomra earned Tk 170 million.

Akhaura land port that mainly deals with export goods from Bangladesh earned Tk 63.6 million. Nakugaon, Sonamosjid, Hili, Teknaf, Bibirbazar and Banglabandha earned Tk 110 million together.

Tapan Kumar Chakrabharty said lion portion of revenue comes from shed and yard charge, entry charge and document preparation fees. BLPA has targeted to earn Tk 1.20 billion from the land ports in the current fiscal year (FY18), he added.

So far 23 Land Customs Stations have been declared as Land Ports. Of the declared land ports, Benapole, Bhomra, Burimari, Akhaura and Nakugaon are being operated by own management of BLPA.

On the other hand, Sonamosjid, Hili, Teknaf, Bibirbazar and Banglabandha Land Ports are being operated by Private Port Operators on BOT (Build, Operate and Transfer) basis.

BLPA chairman said Tamabil land port will start operations in full swing from September 11.
