Marginal fish farmers face Tk 300m losses due to flooding in Joypurhat

JOYPURHAT, Aug 22:  The marginal fish farm owners of all the five upazilas of the district are worried as they may face around Tk 300 million losses due to flood.

Along with commercial fish farmers, some small investors of the sector are also suffering much as all the fishes from some 23,000 hectares of waterbodies was divested for several flood visiting in the area.  

"I have taken four ponds on lease to cultivate fish spending Tk 0.5 million but all of the ponds were inundated by the floodwater," said fish farm owners Nazrul Islam under Khetlal upazila of the district. He again said, "I have to bear untold miseries as I took loan from the bank."

Hatcheries authority said 78 commercial hatcheries of 196 fish farmers were totally inundated washing out 22 tonnes of fishes and 70 tonnes of fingerlings in only Pachbibi Upazila.

He said the floodwater engulfed the three upazilas when an embankment of Chhoto Jamuan River collapsed under Pachbibi upazila.

Officials of Water Development Board (WDB) said Chhoto Jamuna River was flowing 142 cm above danger level from last few days while the inhabitants were seeking assistance from the government.

On the other hand, around 4,000 flood-affected people of several villages in Pachbibi, Akkelpur, Khetlat, Sadar and Kalai upazilas received relief materials from district administration. The process will be continued till for some days.
