A life-changing story book

Khandaker Zia Hasan
It is said whenever you read a good book, somewhere in the world a door opens to allow in more light. The name of the book I would like to mention here is Chicken Soup for Soul. Why this name? Well, the founder publishers of the book wanted it to soothe and provide comfort, just like their grandmothers' cooking.

Chicken Soup for the Soul, the world's favourite and most recognised storyteller, publishes the famous 'Chicken Soup for the Soul book' series. The series include 250 different books on 250 different topics. They have been translated into more than 40 languages. The specialty of this book is each one comes with 101 stories and all 101 stories are true stories! And they are contributed by the people from all walks of life. You can anytime contribute your life story too. Here goes the history of publishing this book:

A life-changing story bookIt started in 1993 with a simple idea that people could help each other by sharing stories about their lives. For years, people had told their inspirational stories to the founders of this book, motivational speakers Jack Canfield and Mark Victor Hansen. Jack and Mark included these stories in their talks, and their audiences repeatedly asked if they had ever been published. "That story about the boy and the puppy-is that in a book anywhere?", a parent asked Jack. "That story about the boy with the amputated leg who became a tennis star, I need to read that to my staff," a manager told him. Jack was asked repeatedly, "Is that story in a book anywhere?" Eventually, Jack and Mark decided their audiences must be onto something, so they compiled the best 101 stories they'd been told in a book. They called it 'Chicken Soup for the Soul' because they wanted it to soothe and provide comfort, just like their grandmothers' cooking.

They took the book to New York, hoping to sell it to one of the big publishers, but every single one turned them down. The project appeared to have stalled until they met Peter Vegso, the owner of a small health and wellness publisher in Florida named HCI. Peter read some of the stories and loved them, so he decided to give the book a chance, becoming Chicken Soup for the Soul's founding publisher. And after that, there was no look back. Never, in Jack and Mark's wildest dreams, had they imagined what the book would become. Chicken Soup for the Soul turned into one of the most popular and loved books ever published, selling 11 million copies around the world. Readers asked for more stories so we published a "second helping" of Chicken Soup for the Soul and a third after that. Today, they've published more than 250 books, which have become the best-selling trade paperback book series of all time. Here are some interesting facts and figure about the series:

# The Chicken Soup for the Soul book series of over 250 titles has sold more than 110 million copies in the US and Canada.

# Chicken Soup for the Soul books have been translated into 43 languages, have been published in over 100 countries, and have sold more than 500 million copies worldwide.

# Retail sales of Chicken Soup for the Soul-branded products exceed $100 million per year in the US and Canada.

# Total worldwide retail sales of Chicken Soup for the Soul-branded products have exceeded $2.0 billion.

I came to know about this book back in 2000, when I was gifted a copy by one of my students who brought it from the USA. Since then I have become a fan of the book and tried to collect as many series as possible. I even bought the used ones from Nilkhet Book Market. I came across this one in the picture the other day while shopping at Walmart and this special one has been published on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of Canada. Bookworms of Bangladesh are invited to collect the series. They are available in Dhaka. Trust me, they are really worth reading and to some extent, life changing. Let's finish with another saying, read the best books first, or you may not have a chance to read them at all.
