Benapole Land Port has released some 4,000 tonnes of rice since Thursday evening as businesses agreed to take the delivery with the government cutting import duty on the staple food commodity.

“We ordered the release at the reduced duty rate upon a letter from the National Board of Revenue (NBR) Thursday afternoon," said M Shawkat Hossian, Commissioner at Benapole Customs House on Friday morning.

Businesses had been refusing the delivery of 5,000 tonnes of rice seeking a gazette notification on relaxation of duty on the imported rice.

Until August 16, some 250 rice-laden trucks had got stranded at the land port till August 16. Besides, 500 more rice trucks were stuck at India’s Petrapole port on the way to Benapole.

On that very day, the government cut the import duty on rice from 10 per cent to 2.0 percent, paving the easier way for replenishing the stock of the staple food item and keeping its prices stable.

On June 20, businesses started importing rice from India after the government cut 18 per cent tax from the existing duty as its price was rising in the domestic market.

Rice import has speeded up, in fact, after the authorities decided to keep the land port open round the clock from August in a bid to expedite trade activities with India.
