State Minister of Fisheries and Livestock Narayan Chandra Chanda said the ongoing floods will not have any negative impact on the cattle markets in the country.

According to a BSS report, he also said that there would be no crisis of sacrificial cattle during the ensuing Eid-ul-Azha.

"Around 11 or 11.5 million animals are expected to be sacrificed during the coming Eid-ul-Azha and there are 1,15,57,000 sacrificial animals, including 4.7 million cows, in the country.

"Hence, there will be no crisis of sacrificial animals this year," he said while talking to the journalists after a seminar in Dhaka on the day.

A statement on Thursday said the Palli Karma-Sahayak Foundation (PKSF) and Economic Reporters' Forum (ERF) organised the seminar with PKSF Chairman Dr Qazi Kholiquzzaman Ahmad in the chair.

Deputy Managing Director of PKSF Dr Md Jasim Uddin presented the keynote paper on 'Fisheries and livestock sector in poverty alleviation and sustainable development'.

PKSF Managing Director Md Abdul Karim and Additional Secretary of the Fisheries and Livestock Ministry Dr Md Nazrul Anwar and ERF President Saif Islam Dilal, among others, took part in the discussion.

The State Minister said around 10.4 million animals were sacrificed last year.

Replying to a question, he said they are discouraging people to bring Indian cattle as the country has sufficient sacrificial cattle. If animals are brought from India, local breeders face loses, he observed.

After the seminar, PKSF and ERF signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for introducing "PKSF-ERF Award" for the journalists.

Under the deal, nine journalists - three each from television, print and online media - will be given awards for reporting on rural economy every year.
