Onion prices on rise in Bogra markets

BOGRA, Aug 17: Onion prices have been rising in the retail and wholesale markets across district.

The retail price of a kg of fresh onion is Tk 50 to Tk 60 while the wholesale market price is Tk 45 to Tk 48.  

Onion prices on rise in Bogra marketsAccording to the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) office sources, around 1300 hectares of land were brought under the farming of onion in the district this season with the production target of 600 tonnes. But, the farmers had cultivated the crops over 1500 hectares of land and achieved some 650 tonnes yield.

"I have brought around 45 decimal of land under onion cultivation in this season spending Tk 12,000 to pay labour and fartilisers cost," said farmer Halimul Islam under Shibganj upazila of the district. He again said, "I have got some 16 maund of yield and I sold them for Tk 32,000 on Thursday in nearby Dhaphat."

While visiting at Dhaphat, biggest kitchen markets in the northern district, this correspondent found each maund of onion is being sold for Tk 1800 to Tk 1950 in the markets.

Farmer Enamul Haque, 34, at Banduria village said, especially the middlemen of the crops are being highly benefited than the growers selling the spice. The growers are being benefited  somehow as they had sold the raw onion during the harvesting period, he added.

Deputy Director of DAE Protul Chandra said it is a fortune for the onion growers as they are getting fair prices ahead of Eid-ul-Azha. The market of the spice remains high till last week of September, he added.
