SHERPUR, Aug 17: A good number of marginal peasants of the district are attaining financial solvency by farming Bari-1 Malta in Garo hills this season.

The growers have already started achieving satisfactory yield due to favourable weather condition and timely supply of necessary agri-input, said agriculture officer Sharif Iqbal of Nalitabari upazila. The farmers are also happy over the present market prices of the citrus fruit, he added.

"Due to fertile soil of the Garo hills and frequent rain water rendering process, I have got fresh fruits this season," said farmer Mosharaf Hossain of Kalakuma of Ramchandrapukra under Nalitabari upazila.

In a recent visit, this correspondent found over 400 poor farmers of the area are engaged themselves with the profession and being self-reliant gradually. They took a short-term training session from the Bangladesh Agriculture Research Institute (BARI) and became successful Malta growers.

The land of the district is favourable for cultivation several sorts of fruit round the year. Now, Malta, another nutritious fruit, is catching many eyes in the northern part of the district. Now, Malta is taking the lead line of the agriculture sector from last few years.

"I have taken some two acres of land under Malta cultivation spending around Tk 0.1 million and taking logistic support from DAE officers with an expectation to make a profit of Tk 2.0 million," said grower Samsul Islam of Nalitabari upazila.

Deputy Director of DAE Ashraf Islam said farmers of the Garo hill foot area are hopeful to start commercial farming of the crop. "We give all sort of support to the farmers so that they could get a satisfactory output of the fruit every season", he added.
