PABNA, Aug 17: The commercial cultivation of Sugar-apple (Ata) has started in the district for the first time. Around three year ago, some farmers of the area had grown the fruit and found bright economic prospect in it. Now, a good number of farmers are getting interested in farming the tasty fruit.

A source at the local Horticulture Centre said Sugar-apple grows naturally on highland.

The source further said, Shahajan Ali and Wahidul Islam, two guava cultivators of Ishwardi upazila, experimentally cultivated the sugar apple at their own lands three and a half year ago and got good output. Later, they started its commercial cultivation instead of guava cultivation at their lands. Shahajan Ali and Wahidul Islam said, "We first saw this variety of custard apple in Jessore district when we went there on a visit around three and a half year ago. Later, we collected the saplings and began its cultivation on my 14-bighas land. We got more profit than guava."

The officials of the local Horticulture Centre are giving necessary advice to the growers.

Azhar Ali, deputy director of Pabna Horticulture Centre said, the all aged men in the country demand sugar apple.

He expected that the farmers would get handsome profit through cultivating this custard apple. He also urged the farmers to take necessary technical advice from the agriculture department in this connection.
