Bangladesh to cut down rice import duty

Bangladesh to cut down rice import duty
Bangladesh will slash the duty on rice imports to cool high local prices of the staple grain

The government has decided to reduce the import duty from 10 per cent to 2.0 per cent.

Food Minister Qamrul Islam disclosed the decision after a meeting of the Food Planning and Monitoring Committee held at the Secretariat Wednesday.

Talking to reporters after the meeting, he said the decision to cut down the import duty was taken to stabilise the rice market and a circular will be issued soon in this regard, report agencies.

Bangladesh, the world's fourth-biggest rice producer, has emerged as a major importer of rice this year due to depleted stocks and record high local prices following flash floods.
