Flood forces closure of Simulbari pry school for over a month

Our Correspondent

BOGRA, Aug 14:  Academic activities of Simulbari Government Primary School under Dhunot upazila of Bogra district has been closed for more than a month due to flood.

The school building, situated on low-lying land, is unable to run classes for between two and three months each year from the month of June to August and the academic progress is halted massively.

In a recent visit this correspondent found around 200 students from class one to five suffer much due to the impact of the flood situation. They have left studying rather catching fish with nets and Kholshahni. This year rainfall and flooding across the northeast have been far more than usual. The situation is exacerbated by the heavy rainfall.

"I passed class five from the school in 2005," said Saiful Islam son of Ruhul Amin of Shimulbari village under the upazila. Since childhood he sees that this school closes every year for several months. The site is prone to flash flooding when water from nearby Jamuna Rivers rises. The students wait eagerly for the rain to start. They knew it would be an unscheduled holiday. But on the other hand, students can hardly achieve good academic results for the disruption.

"Classes of the school have been suspended due to the excess water," said the president of the school's management committee. He again said, "The school is four-feet below the level of the road as the water of the mighty Jamuna River is rising gradually.

The teachers may hold some classes on one side of the school that is on higher ground, if they wish, said a guardian. He also said the committee has appealed to the authorities for the school to be developed with a two-storey building that could also serve as a flood evacuation centre, but that no action has yet been taken.

"Classes were supposed to commence on 1 July," said one of the school's guardians Shamsul Alam. He again said, due to the flooding it wasn't possible. Actually, many people won't send their children to this school because it is so commonly closed.

The government education officers informed the FE that over 200 primary schools in Bogra district are currently closed due to flooding. Simulbari government primary school has the unenviable distinction of being submerged every year, they added.
