No price fixing of medicines by Drug Administration

Media reports revealed that the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare prepared a draft National Medicine Policy, which has been approved by the cabinet. No doubt it is a laudable effort by the present government. It should have been made much earlier. However, it is better late than never. A lot of appreciable features have been included in the said policy as media reports.

But one vital feature is missing. Pricing of all medicines has not been proposed to be mandatory by the controlling authority of the government, that is, Drug Administration (DA). Only 450 medicines of generic names have been proposed under compulsory price control, that is, prices of 450 medicines are to be approved by the Drug Administration and price of other medicines will be fixed by manufacturers.

If fixation of price is left at the hands of pharmaceutical manufacturers, it will not have any beneficial effects on patients. The proposed policy is required to include the provision of mandatory price fixing by the Drug Administration. The maximum retail price of all pharmaceutical products to be marketed in Bangladesh must be approved by the controlling authority of the government, DA and it has to fix the price as low as possible so that the patients can afford them whenever necessary. The DA has to bear in mind that in Bangladesh the majority of population are poor and 12.9 per cent is ultra-poor. The financial capacity of these people is very limited. I shall urge upon the authority concerned to include provision of price approval of all medicines by the DA.
