NAOGAON, Aug 13: Floodwaters caused by excessive rainfall have submerged Aman paddy on around 5,500 hectares of land in Badalgachi upazila of the district.

The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) sources said some 11,000 hectares of land have been brought under Aman cultivation in all eight unions of the upazila this season.

But, about half of the total croplands have been inundated by the flash flood and continuous rains for the last couple of days.

Farmers in Bilashbari, Haludbihar, Balrampur, Barfala, Lakshmipur, Hazipur, Jolapara Bhagbanpur and Kashimala areas of the upazila have been worst victims of flood in the district this year, the sources added.

The growers are now worried about recouping their cultivation cost and maintaining their family expenditures as the affected paddy fields are on high risk of damage.

Upazila agriculture officer Hasan Ali stated flood hit the upazila at the time when farmers have not completed transplanting Aman sapling on their land.

If there is not further rain, the inaunded Aman paddy would be saved at large.
