Tragic memories revisit for 6th time

Tareque, Munier’s death anniv today
FE Desk Report

Grieving over Tareque Masud and Mishuk Munier, who lost lives along with three others in a fatal road crash on the Dhaka-Aricha highway in Manikganj on August 13, 2011, different organisations will arrange elaborate programmes in the city and outside today (Saturday).

Sudden passing away of the two towering personalities- filmmaker Tareque Masud and cinematographer and broadcast journalist Mishuk Munier- in the road accident six years back sent shockwaves through the nation.

However, the Dhaka-Aricha highway, which was once identified as the death trap, has turned into a 'model of safe road' with massive development work following  intervention of Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader.

Road accidents have declined there remarkably following completion of reconstruction works on most of the 209 risky turnings on the highway.

Marking their death anniversary, various television channels will also screen special programmes on their lives and works.

On this occasion, Tareque Masud Memorial Trust (TMMT) and Moviyana Film Society will jointly hold a programme.

The programme will feature a memorial lecture, discussion and paying homage to Tareque as well as screening his work.

As part of the programme, 'Tareque Masud Memorial Lecture' and a memorial discussion will be held in the seminar room of Jatiya Nattyshala of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy.

A film screening session will also be held at the beginning of the programme.

Theatre personality Ramendu Majumdar, cultural personality and filmmaker Nasir Uddin Yusuf and filmmaker Morshedul Islam will attend the memorial discussion.

General Secretary of the Federation of Film Societies of Bangladesh (FFSB) and President of the Moviyana Film Society Belat Hossain Mamun will discuss and conduct the memorial and memorial lecture while president of FFSB architect Lilun Nahar Sabbi will preside over the memorial and memorial lecture.

The programme will begin at 5pm with the screening of Tareque Masud's original documentary on the artist SM Sultan, 'Adam Surot' while Prasun Rahman's original documentary 'Fera' will be displayed at 6 pm on the life of Tareque Masud.  A special tribute 'August Aricha Road' by Prasun Rahman will also be screened at 7pm.

Filmmaker Prusun Rahman will present the keynote speech titled 'Movies of Tareque Masud and reading and re-reading of Tareque Masud' at the end after the candlelight vigil at 6:40 pm.

Dhaka University Film Society (DUFS) and the National Committee to Protect River, Road and Railways and other organisations will observe the day.

DUFS organised the Ninth International Inter-University Short Film Festival from Saturday at the TSC auditorium with the screening of Bangla films while eminent filmmaker Catherine Masud, wife of Tareque Masud, attended the programme.

As part of the DUFS programme, film screening will be held at Alliance Francaise, Dhaka, on August 20-21 and at Alliance Francaise, Chittagong, on August 24-25.
