While contacted Managing Director of the airport Saheen Ahamed said Japan International Co-operation Agency would provide financial support for the project.

Security measures have been tightened in the airport. Fencing with barbedwire round the airport has already been completed. Close circuit camera (CC) has been installed and heavy armed guards have been deployed.

Sources said passengers in the airport have increased manifold as this is the lone airport of Rangpur Division and its adjacent areas. As many as five flights of different airlines including Biman Bangladesh (BB) are being conducted in Syedpur Dhaka route everyday which is not even enough to accommodate ever increasing number of air travelers.

Uttara EPZ, proposed Special Economic Zone (SEZ) near Syedpur, Boropukuria Coalmine and Electricity generation plant, Syedpur Railway workshop and so on increased the potentiality of the airport to convert it into international standard.
