Airport fire under control, departure resumes

The fire, which was reported at the third storey of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka, is now under control.

Ekattor Television also says air traffic is now normal at the airport.

Meanwhile, reports, the fire had originated from Air India's office on the third storey around 1:30pm Friday, said Abdul Mannan, senior officer at Kurmitola Fire Station.

Ten firefighting units doused the fire that started around 3pm, he said.

Electricity supply to the airport was resumed, said Rasheda Sultana, the airport's chief security officer.

Departure activities have resumed and passengers were no longer being stopped from entering the building, she said. Arrivals had continued despite the firefighting efforts.

The airport's third storey also houses the offices of Saudia, a duty officer of the Armed Police Battalion said.

Authorities were yet to comment on the extent of damage caused by the fire, which is set to disrupt flights for hajj pilgrims.

"We are not sure where the fire started. There are various accounts. But there is a lot of smoke here," said Rasheda Sultana, the airport's chief security officer.

There are no immediate reports of casualties.
